GPT-4o mini
GPT-4o mini (July 2024) is OpenAI's small, low-cost variant of GPT-4o — positioned as the successor to GPT-3.5 Turbo, clearly stronger at a much lower price per token.
GPT-4o mini — explained in more detail
GPT-4o mini was unveiled in July 2024 as a small, low-cost variant of GPT-4o — explicitly positioned as the replacement for GPT-3.5 Turbo. At a much lower price per token its quality sits clearly above GPT-3.5, without quite reaching full GPT-4o class. The model is more limited multimodally than the larger GPT-4o, but for many use cases that is enough.
Example / Practical context
Typical applications are simple tasks, high-volume pipelines and chat front-ends under cost pressure — anywhere per-request economics matter and the model still has to perform reliably. Classification, summarization, data extraction or a chat assistant with moderate requirements run well on it, without consuming a top-tier model’s budget.
Distinction from related concepts
Compared to full GPT-4o, mini is cheaper and faster but less capable on complex reasoning or coding problems. Its direct competitors in the market are Claude Haiku or Gemini Flash — all three occupy the “small, fast, cheap” niche and are intended as volume models for standard tasks, not for the hardest problems.

GlossarGPT-4o
GPT-4o (May 2024) was OpenAI's first natively multimodal model — text, audio and image in a single model, with a real-time voice mode and substantially lower cost than GPT-4 Turbo.
