AI Image Generation

AI image generation creates images from text prompts using generative models. Tools such as Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly and Stable Diffusion are used in marketing for concepts, visuals and image editing.

AI Image Generation — explained in detail

AI image generation is the creation of visual content by generative models that compute an image from a text input (the prompt). Instead of taking a photo or drawing a graphic by hand, you describe the subject, style, framing and mood in words, and the model turns that description into an image.

Technically, most of today’s tools are built on diffusion models: they start from a noise pattern and remove it step by step until an image matching the prompt emerges. The underlying mechanics are covered in more detail under Diffusers. For day-to-day marketing work, however, what matters less is the mechanics and more the question of which tool best solves which task.

Common tools and their strengths

  • Midjourney: Strong at artistic, stylised visuals — for example mood imagery, social media content and moodboards.
  • DALL-E: Good at detailed, photorealistic subjects from precise text descriptions; often integrated into OpenAI tools.
  • Adobe Firefly: Tightly embedded in Photoshop (Generative Fill) and trained on licensed data — hence the usual choice for commercial projects that need legal certainty.
  • Stable Diffusion: Open source and able to run locally; allows fine-grained control and custom styling, for instance via fine-tuning or LoRA.

Output quality depends heavily on the prompt — deliberate prompt engineering determines how closely the image matches the intended idea.

Example / practical relevance

A typical marketing workflow combines several tools: Midjourney provides mood and style for a campaign, a more realistic model produces product or headline visuals, and Adobe Firefly handles the final retouching directly in the familiar image editor. This turns a text briefing into a set of coordinated visuals in a short time — from concept sketch to ready-to-use image.

Post-processing remains important: AI images are usually reviewed, cropped and compressed for the web before publication (see image optimization with WebP and AVIF). Licensing and copyright questions also need to be assessed differently depending on the tool.

Distinction from similar terms

  • AI image generation vs. image editing: Image generation creates a new image from text; image editing modifies an existing image. Tools like Firefly combine both.
  • AI image generation vs. Diffusers: Image generation is the application; Diffusers is a specific software library used to run the underlying diffusion models.
  • AI image generation vs. stock photography: Stock images are ready-made, licensed shots from a database; with image generation the subject is created individually from a description.
