Brave Search
Search engine from the Brave browser company with its own index — privacy-focused and one of the few fully independent indexes alongside Google, Bing, and Yandex.
Brave Search — explained in more detail
Brave Search has been available since 2021 and runs on an independent index — no Bing or Google dependency. The crawler is called Brave Bot. Brave markets itself on privacy (no user tracking profiles) and offers “Goggles”, letting users apply their own re-ranking filters to the result list.
The Brave Search API is increasingly used by AI answer systems that need an independent index — including by some LLM providers as a web-search backend. That gives Brave Search growing importance beyond pure end-user reach.
Example / In practice
Anyone building an LLM-based search service who doesn’t want to depend on the Google/Bing API frequently picks the Brave Search API as a backend — it provides raw, non-personalized results with transparent pricing. Brave Search indexing follows classic standards: sitemap, robots.txt, clean HTML.
Distinction from similar terms
Kagi also has its own index but is paid and smaller. DuckDuckGo and Ecosia use Bing — they are not true index alternatives. Mojeek is another independent crawler, much smaller than Brave.
