News SEO / Google News

News SEO is the SEO discipline for news-oriented sites — speed, freshness, news sitemap, NewsArticle schema, and inclusion in Google News and Top Stories are the levers.

News SEO / Google News — explained in more detail

News SEO deviates from standard SEO on several points:

  • Speed beats almost everything. An article online within minutes of an event — properly indexed — can grab Top Stories slots that are no longer available later.
  • News sitemap (separate XML, max. 1,000 URLs from the last 48 h) signals freshness directly to Googlebot.
  • NewsArticle schema with datePublished, dateModified, author, publisher delivers the mandatory fields for news indexing.
  • Top Stories carousel in the SERPs requires mobile-optimized articles. AMP has not been required since late 2021, but performance remains critical.
  • Google News content policies: clear editorial separation, source transparency, no pure re-publish logic.
  • Live updates via LiveBlogPosting schema for live tickers.

Example / In practice

A tech news site publishes a story on a new AI model 12 minutes after the vendor press release. Via news-sitemap ping in Search Console, the URL is indexed within 4 minutes. Top Stories carousel: position 2 for the first 6 hours, six-figure traffic spike — gone after 24h, but long-tail traffic stays.

Distinction from similar terms

Blog SEO targets evergreen content and topic authority — news SEO targets a freshness burst. Programmatic SEO is a scaling strategy — applied to news content it would be spam. Discover is the mobile, personalized counterpart to Top Stories — different logic (no search trigger, push), but overlapping optimization levers.
