Term
Local Zero
Share of local search queries answered directly in the SERP — via map pack, knowledge panel or Google Business Profile — without a click to any website. The conversion happens inside Google, not on your site.
Local Zero — explained in more detail
“Local Zero” is not an official Google term — it is an emerging SEO shorthand for the intersection of zero-click search and local SEO. It captures the growing share of local queries — “dentist near me”, “coffee shop Berlin Mitte”, “bakery opening hours” — that Google answers entirely inside the SERP: the local pack with three map results, the knowledge panel with address, reviews, opening hours and a click-to-call button serve the user directly from the Google Business Profile. No click-through is required; the conversion (call, directions, booking) happens inside Google’s surface.
For local businesses this is double-edged: visibility in the local pack rises, but traditional click metrics no longer reflect success. Watching only sessions and page views misses the impact. The relevant KPI shifts to GBP insights — profile views, calls, direction requests, bookings logged inside the profile.
Example / Practical context
A pizzeria ranks #1 in the local pack for “pizza delivery Cologne”. In the SERP the user sees stars, opening hours, a phone number and an “Order” button — calls or orders directly, never opening the restaurant’s website. In GA4 the transaction never appears; in GBP insights it does. Reporting therefore has to include GBP insights, call tracking and Maps direction clicks — otherwise it looks as though traffic is dropping while revenue actually rises.
Distinction from related concepts
Zero-click search is the umbrella term for any query that ends without a website visit — weather, calculators, featured snippets included. Local Zero is the local flavour, anchored in the Google Business Profile. AI Overviews / GEO describe zero-click results from generative AI, not necessarily local. All three are symptoms of the same movement: Google keeps users on its own surface.
