Product Reviews Update
The Product Reviews Update was a series of Google algorithm updates starting April 2021 that distinguished product reviews with real, in-depth hands-on research from shallow affiliate lists.
Product Reviews Update — explained in more detail
The Product Reviews Update launched in April 2021 and went through several iterations (December 2021, March 2022, July 2022, September 2022, February 2023). It evaluated product reviews on criteria such as: visible domain expertise, original tests/measurements, original media (photos, videos), quantitative evidence, real-world pros and cons, cross-vendor comparisons.
In April 2023 the update was renamed to the broader Reviews Update — adding service, travel, software, and place reviews. In March 2024, the reviews system was fully merged into the core ranking stack the same way HCU was; standalone reviews updates are no longer announced.
Example / In practice
A German review site for kitchen appliances loses 40 % visibility with the March 2022 Product Reviews Update because many top-10 lists merely paraphrase manufacturer specs. After a relaunch with real tests, original photos, and measurements, the site recovers in the following updates.
Distinction from similar terms
Reviews Update is the successor/expansion since 2023, with a wider topic scope. HCU targets writing intent and value generally; the Product Reviews Update was the earlier, more specific precursor for review content. Core update has incorporated the reviews logic since March 2024.
